For the development of potential investment opportunities the three main uses of Moringa can be summarized as:
  • Dried leaf powder for human and animal consumption
  • Oil for cosmetic/beauty products, human consumption and biofuel
  • Leaf, twigs and press cake as animal fodder

In Africa a multi-purpose crop, such as the Moringa tree, will benefit the food, beauty, biofuel and several other industries. Several reports from Southern Africa strongly support that this “miracle tree” would benefit the rural communities of Africa in which large scale plantations will provide substantive real employment opportunities and provide a sustainable income for marginalized communities. Moringa produce can be consumed or sold as a food source, cooking oil, fodder, biofuel, as well as contribute to the improved quality of water supply in rural areas. This tree is a suitable candidate for commercial establishment in different areas in Africa, as it, despite mostly naturally occurring in the tropics and subtropics, can tolerate higher temperature extremes and/or survive light frost and tolerates a wide range of soil and rainfall conditions.

Our farm is nestled along the magnificent Crocodile River. The farm is ideally located for Moringa tree farming with the correct climate and available water supply. Trees take six to eight months to reach leaf yielding maturity after planting, and leaves can be harvested every three month thereafter.

The plan is to plant 500,000 Moringa trees over ten months. Trees will be planted in rows half a meter apart yielding ten thousand trees per hectare. Ideally three to four months from planting trees, harvesting will commence with a maximum of six to eight months.

It is expected, that each tree will produce 1kg’s of leaves (wet harvest). Thereafter, trees will be harvested every three months. These leaves will be washed and dried (24-36 hrs) after which they will be milled into powder form. 250,000 trees will produce 30 tons of powder, three times per year, equating to R7 million per year, at the expected wholesale price of R80 per kilogram. (excl. packaged)

SeedsCarrier oil for cosmeticsIt has a capacity to absorb and retain volatile substances and is therefore valuable in the perfume and cosmetics industry for stabilizing scents
SeedsThe press cake, following oil extraction, is pulverized and added to waterThe cationic polyelectrolytes neutralize the colloids in muddy or dirty water since the majority of these colloids have a negative electrical charge. This protein can therefore be used as a non-toxic natural polypeptide for sedimenting mineral particles and organics in the purification of drinking water, for cleaning vegetable oil, or for sedimenting fibers in the juice and beer industries.

Plant Growth Enhancer
LeavesUsed in the form of a foliar sprayUse of the growth hormone spray will also cause the plants to be firmer and more resistant to pests and disease. Plants that are treated with this growth hormone spray will also produce more and larger fruit and will consequently have a higher yield at harvest time
TreePlanted between food crops
  • Pruning can be used as mulch, can be easily established
  • Is fast growing and therefore produces much biomass
  • Is deep rooted without many shallow, lateral roots
  • Sends out new growth rapidly after repeated severe pruning
  • Provides useful by-products
  • Has high protein (nitrogen) content in the foliage
  • Has a loose canopy preventing excessive crop shading
Erosion controlCan be planted in areas where erosion is prevalent to limit the removal of topsoil and secure the ground with the deep rooting system
TreePlanting in areas vulnerable to erosionEasily established, fast growing
